CryoEM characterization services for

Lipid Nanoparticles

Advancing Lipid Nanoparticle Innovation with Cryo-Electron Microscopy Available at CNSI

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have become a cornerstone of modern biotechnology, enabling breakthroughs in RNA vaccines, gene therapies, and targeted drug delivery. At UCLA’s California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), the Electron Imaging Center for Nanosystems (EICN) offers industry-leading cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) characterization services for lipid nanoparticles, providing researchers with the clarity, speed, and reliability needed to advance discovery and translation.

Rates

Standard services (includes 1.5 hours of assisted usage; 1 hour of TF20 usage, and 1 grid)
Users from UC campuses $255 per LNP sample
Non-UC affiliated academic or non-profit users $347.50 per LNP sample
Industry users $495 per LNP sample

High-Resolution Cryo-EM Characterization for LNPs

Since 2012, EICN has been at the forefront of cryo-EM imaging and analysis for LNPs, with professional staff processing more than 5,000 nanoparticle samples for academic and industrial users. Cryo-electron microscopy allows researchers to visualize lipid nanoparticles in a near-native, frozen-hydrated state, offering unparalleled insight into particle size, structure, and morphology. Users can request detailed size distribution analyses and morphological assessments to evaluate formulation quality and performance. For advanced needs, EICN also offers cryo-electron tomography, enabling three-dimensional visualization of lipid particles or viruses at nanometer resolution.

Industry Partnerships, Speed, and Reliability

These capabilities are particularly valuable to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors, including the rapidly evolving RNA vaccine and therapeutic space. Through collaborations with industry partners such as Moderna, EICN has supported efforts to better understand how RNA is encapsulated within lipid nanoparticles—information essential for optimizing delivery efficiency and therapeutic efficacy.

EICN stands apart through its exceptional image quality, rapid turnaround, and cost-effective access. With established workflows and a dedicated team of scientists, EICN consistently delivers high-quality results within five business days.

By combining cutting-edge instrumentation with experienced scientific support, EICN serves as a trusted partner for researchers and biotech companies seeking rigorous, reliable nanoparticle characterization.
