EICN Advisory Committee
Advisory Committees are comprised of experts in their respective fields tasked with providing insight and perspective into new trends, emerging technologies and strategic partnerships that will foster discovery and innovation in the full breadth of application areas relevant to each Technology Center.
Z. Hong Zhou
Founding Director, Committee Chairperson, EICN; Professor Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics
Dr. Zhou is a structural biologist and UCLA professor in the department of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics. He is the founding director of the Electron Imaging Center for Nanosystems and a pioneer in cryo-electron microscopy.
Born in Hunan, China, he studied physics and solid-state physics at the University of Science and Technology of China before earning his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Baylor College of Medicine, specializing in structural biology and imaging viruses like herpes.
David Eisenberg
Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and of Biological Chemistry
David Eisenberg is currently Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Biological Chemistry, as well as HHMI Investigator and Director of the UCLA-DOE Institute for Genomics and Proteomics. Before he came to UCLA, Eisenberg earned an A.B. in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard College and a D.Phil. from Oxford University in Theoretical Chemistry on a Rhodes Scholarship. After postdoctoral study at Princeton University on water and hydrogen bonding and at Caltech on protein crystallography, he joined the faculty at UCLA. Currently he studies protein interactions by X-ray crystallography, bioinformatics, and biochemistry, with an emphasis on amyloid-forming proteins.
Yu Huang
Professor Materials Science and Engineering; Traugott and Dorothea Frederking Endowed Chair
Dr. Yu Huang holds the Traugott and Dorothea Frederking Endowed Chair in Engineering and serves as a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), her MA in Chemistry and her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Harvard University. Following her doctoral studies on bottom-up assembly of functional circuits, Dr. Huang was awarded the prestigious Lawrence Postdoctoral Fellowship.
Yuzhang Li
Associate Professor Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
Yuzhang Li, an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering. Li, who joined UCLA in 2020, leads a research group that uses cryo-EM to study the atomic-scale assembly of lithium for next-generation battery charging. The work has led to a cover feature in Nature and earned him several honors, including an Army Research Office Young Investigator Award, a Naval Research Office Young Investigator Award and a California Climate Action Grant. He has also received a U.S. Department of Energy Early Career Research Award for investigating atomic-scale processes using cryo-EM.
B.C. Regen
Professor of Physics
Dr. Chris Regen is a faculty member in the UCLA department of Physics and Astronomy. He is a condensed matter physicist who studies the overlap between thermodynamics and quantum mechanics; he is also constructing a model system for clean energy harvesting. His areas of research include carbon nanotubes, graphene, nanofabrication and in situ electron microscopy. His group at UCLA develops new metrology tools for studying microfabricated, electronically activated systems with electron microscopes.
Jose Rodriquez
Associate Professor Chemistry & Biochemistry
Professor Jose Rodriguez is one of two UCLA faculty members selected for the inaugural 2024–25 UCLA Academic Senate Service Rising Star Award. Rodriguez earned his B.S. in biophysics and Ph.D. in molecular biology at UCLA. Before joining the UCLA faculty in 2016, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the laboratory of Professor David Eisenberg. He currently holds the Howard Reiss Development Chair in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry.
David Williams
Professor-in-Residence, Ophthalmology
Dr. Williams’ laboratory focuses on the cell biology of photoreceptor and RPE cells. His group is especially interested in cell biological studies of the retina in relation to retinal function and inherited retinal disease. Basic science investigations in the laboratory include identifying how proteins and organelles are transported and targeted within the photoreceptor and RPE cells.
